How to use your splits

A split plan exists to stop you starting too fast. That is the most common mistake in any race, and it costs more at the end than it gains at the start.

Write down the times for the markers you will actually see — usually every kilometre on the road, every 400 metres on the track. Then compare as you go. If you are ten seconds ahead of schedule after three kilometres, you do not have a lead; you have borrowed time you will pay back with interest.

Custom distances

Choose Custom at the bottom of the distance wheel and a second wheel appears where you can set the distance in metres or kilometres. Useful for track sessions, an odd local race, or an interval workout you want splits for.
